{"id":93,"date":"2018-10-14T13:22:07","date_gmt":"2018-10-14T16:22:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/projects.upei.ca\/arts-equity-and-inclusion\/?p=93"},"modified":"2018-11-19T08:53:39","modified_gmt":"2018-11-19T12:53:39","slug":"names-and-pronouns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/projects.upei.ca\/arts-equity-and-inclusion\/2018\/10\/14\/names-and-pronouns\/","title":{"rendered":"Names and pronouns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>from Brielle Harbin, <a href=\"https:\/\/cft.vanderbilt.edu\/teaching-beyond-the-gender-binary-in-the-university-classroom\/\">\u201cTeaching Beyond the Gender Binary in the University Classroom,\u201d<\/a> (Vanderbilt University, Centre for Teaching)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some useful gender affirming practices:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Only call roll or read the class roster aloud after providing students with an opportunity to share their requested name and pronouns, and what they care to disclose to the class.<\/li>\n<li>Allow students to self-identify the name and pronouns they prefer.<\/li>\n<li>Set a tone of respect the first day of class as part of the course expectations and connect this discussion with honoring one another\u2019s requested names and pronouns.<\/li>\n<li>Acknowledge when you\u2019ve made a mistake about someone\u2019s pronoun and correct yourself.<\/li>\n<li>Honor students\u2019 requested names in all university settings including (but not limited to): office hours, classroom, student group meetings, or when speaking with other faculty or staff.<\/li>\n<li>Politely provide a correction whether the person who was misgendered is present or not.<\/li>\n<li>Do not ask personal questions of gender non-conforming people that you would not ask of others.
