{"id":690,"date":"2020-05-09T13:25:06","date_gmt":"2020-05-09T16:25:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/projects.upei.ca\/mais\/?page_id=690"},"modified":"2021-04-14T13:59:08","modified_gmt":"2021-04-14T16:59:08","slug":"poetry-by-megan-macdonald","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/projects.upei.ca\/mais\/sails-tales\/poetry-by-megan-macdonald\/","title":{"rendered":"Sails &amp; Tales | Poetry \u2013 Megan Lane MacDonald"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div style=\"height:42px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Certainty of Truth<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My father tells me kernels of wisdom<br>passed down from our ancestors: <br>fishers, farmers, and Celts.<br>Prophetic signs, safeguards,<br>and slippery facts you can\u2019t pin down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He says<br>that when all the cows in a field lie down,<br>that\u2019s almost certainly a sign of rain.<br>He can never fully dismiss the ideas <br>for who really knows the truth for certain anyway?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His eyes sparkle like his father&#8217;s, <br>with more than just a hint of mischief<br>when he tells me that pigs can see the wind.<br>And who&#8217;s to say they can&#8217;t?<br>Not the pigs, certainly!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a cheerful smile, he reminds me<br>that iron wards off evil,<br>holy water can protect a home from lightning,<br>and deaths come in threes.<br>And I\u2019ve never seen proof to the contrary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His forefathers declared Gaelic the world&#8217;s first language, <br>&#8220;Spoken by Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden!&#8221; <br>And who&#8217;s to say that any of them are wrong? <br>Not me, certainly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:18px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:18px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Inauguration<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We meet the sea at an early age.<br>Babbling tongues taste salt before learning to talk.<br>Little legs splash and kick the waves,<br>and gain a love for water before trying to walk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In these formative years, we slide<br>between worlds, search for snails, sea glass and shells,<br>know the value of looking closely, <br>of searching and finding. This is how <br>we learn to find ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:18px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:18px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Change<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Change comes slow to islands.<br>It crosses oceans to arrive on our shores.<br>Trends come late, technology later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grown farm children still recall<br>the shift from out-house to in-house,<br>one-room schools, party lines,<br>and the coming of the pavement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Change comes suddenly to islands<br>as natural as sands slipping into the sea.<br>A flood of new life brings new methods and manners<br>and unfamiliar words from far worlds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New shops pop up like mushrooms<br>selling falafel, tandoori, japchae, and sushi.<br>We hear Arabic on the streets,<br>and notes from steelpans float through the air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Acceptance comes slow to this island,<br>like the tide coming in.<br>Wave by wave,<br>retreating a little less each time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:55px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/projects.upei.ca\/mais\/sails-tales\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"582\">RETURN TO SAILS &amp; TALES<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Certainty of Truth My father tells me kernels of wisdompassed down from our ancestors: fishers, farmers, and Celts.Prophetic signs, safeguards,and slippery facts you can\u2019t pin down.
