Monica describes how her residential school experience affected her identity very clearly: \u201cI think I lost myself.\u201d When Monica returned to a culture she hardly knew, her parents selected a husband for her. Abused in residential school, her\u00a0husband \u201chad lost his identity, his self-respect and self-worth. He couldn\u2019t trust anyone&#8230; and I\u00a0wasn\u2019t any better.\u201d During their painful and turbulent marriage, Monica\u2019s baby daughter was\u00a0given in traditional \u2018custom adoption\u2019 against her will. She now cares for her grand-daughter and\u00a0concludes with hope and pain, \u201cI think I know who I am now but I don\u2019t know who I was at the\u00a0age of seven-eight.
