(UPEI&#8217;s first telescope?)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What happens when the laboratory technicians are assessing the equipment in the physics storeroom and notice a\u00a0long wooden box on the top shelf?\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/projects.upei.ca\/astronomy\/files\/2014\/05\/003.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-261\" src=\"https:\/\/projects.upei.ca\/astronomy\/files\/2014\/05\/003-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"003\" width=\"307\" height=\"409\" srcset=\"https:\/\/projects.upei.ca\/astronomy\/files\/2014\/05\/003-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/projects.upei.ca\/astronomy\/files\/2014\/05\/003-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 307px) 100vw, 307px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>They open up the box\u00a0and find a telescope.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/projects.upei.ca\/astronomy\/files\/2014\/05\/002.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-262\" src=\"https:\/\/projects.upei.ca\/astronomy\/files\/2014\/05\/002-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"002\" width=\"584\" height=\"778\" srcset=\"https:\/\/projects.upei.ca\/astronomy\/files\/2014\/05\/002-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/projects.upei.ca\/astronomy\/files\/2014\/05\/002-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a>It may seem strange to not know that we had this telescope, but a combination\u00a0of changing astronomy instructors with a departmental move (that causes equipment to end up in new unknown locations) can result in\u00a0an item getting forgotten.<\/p>\n<p>This telescope is a 6-inch <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Newtonian_telescope\">Newtonian reflector<\/a>. I&#8217;m not sure how old it is &#8211; it sort of has a &#8217;70s look to me. Perhaps this was the first telescope that UPEI Physics had in the 1970s, when observations took place <a href=\"https:\/\/projects.upei.ca\/astronomy\/about-2\/\">on the roof of the Duffy building<\/a>.\u00a0It does have homemade replacement dust covers, which would fit with the story of how the original dust covers blew\u00a0off the roof during a windy observation session.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/projects.upei.ca\/astronomy\/files\/2014\/05\/007.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-263 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/projects.upei.ca\/astronomy\/files\/2014\/05\/007-300x185.jpg\" alt=\"007\" width=\"300\" height=\"185\" srcset=\"https:\/\/projects.upei.ca\/astronomy\/files\/2014\/05\/007-300x185.jpg 300w, https:\/\/projects.upei.ca\/astronomy\/files\/2014\/05\/007-1024x631.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/projects.upei.ca\/astronomy\/files\/2014\/05\/007-486x300.jpg 486w, https:\/\/projects.upei.ca\/astronomy\/files\/2014\/05\/007.jpg 1657w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The telescope\u00a0was made by Anchor Optical Co. which now seems to exist as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.anchoroptics.com\/\">Anchor Optics<\/a>\u00a0(a division of Edmund Optics) that makes specialized lenses for research and educational applications.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Given the telescope&#8217;s size, it should be great for field work.
