About

Mission

The Centre’s mission is to promote and advance Korean Asian Studies in the Faculty of Arts with respect to:

  • Research, publication, international scholarly conference and speaker series
  • KS course offering, teaching and hiring
  • International academic-cultural activities and events
  • Student scholarship and research mentorship
  • Other new academic initiatives, and
  • Local community outreach initiatives

The UPEI CKS is a a new innovative Centre in Eastern Canada that can compete with UBC’s CKS and UofT’s CKS. It seeks to develop a strong regional, national and international network of research, scholarly and educational collaboration with KS scholars and researchers at other universities in Canada, USA, Korea and other parts of the world. This is to be done in interdisciplinary consultation with UPEI faculty and students who are interested in Korean Asian Studies.

Most of the Centre’s mission is to be externally funded by international KS research grants, which nicely fits in with the UPEI Strategic Plan’s priority emphasis on “new [external] sources of funding” and “actively seek grant and funding opportunities” (priorities 3 and 5, pp. 14, 16). The Centre also supports UPEI’s mission and priorities as specified in its Centres Policy and new Strategic Research Plan (2023-2028) as well; for example, the Centre’s research and scholarship endeavor to facilitate the Strategic Research Plan’s priority to “increase the research intensiveness at UPEI and the University’s profile and prominence locally, nationally and internationally” (sec. 1, p.3).
