The UPEI English Language Centre is looking for volunteers to join us in assisting with afternoon socio-cultural activities and acting as conversation partners for this year’s English Language Programs! This is a fantastic opportunity to learn and strengthen valuable skills, experience other cultures, and of course have a blast doing it! WHAT ARE THE UPEI CUSTOMIZED EAP SUMMER PROGRAMS?
The UPEI Customized English Language Summer Program is designed for students from around the world. It gives students the unique opportunity to visit Prince Edward Island while developing their language skills in an immersive, English-centered environment. Students are enrolled in customized English Academic Preparation (EAP) courses in the mornings and then participate in various socio-cultural activities in the afternoons.
The morning classes focus on oral and written communication skills as a result of learning about a specific curricular topic that is of interest to the group. The socio-cultural activities in the afternoon will vary from group to group but some example activities may include:
- Scavenger Hunts
- Guest lectures
- Victoria Park Activities
- Trips to the Beach, National Parks, Heritage Sites
- Downtown Charlottetown Tours
- and much more!
WHAT ARE THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF A VOLUNTEER?
Duties of a volunteer include acting as a conversation partner with camp participants during activities, actively engaging in any activities you are volunteering for, taking some time to get to know the program, being accepting of support and feedback, as well as offering any suggestions or feedback that you may have to help improve an activity or to improve the program for the next year.
WHY SHOULD I VOLUNTEER?
There are many perks to volunteering with our program. Such as developing your intercultural skills by meeting and interacting with people from all over the world, participating in fun and enjoyable activities, contributing to the success of a program, the feeling of satisfaction from helping others in their learning of the English Language, and gaining exposure to various work settings and developing professional competencies such as:
- Communication
- Leadership
- Professionalism
- Critical thinking
- Teamwork
- and more!
You will receive a certificate of participation, and a letter of recognition can be made available upon request (with a minimum of five volunteer activities), all of which looks fantastic when building a resume!
WHEN DO I VOLUNTEER?
Time commitment is entirely up to you and when you are available. Most activities happen in afternoons Monday-Friday, but there are some weekend activities through the summer as well. You can help with anywhere from one or two activities total through the summer to as many as you are able to help out with!
