{"id":3009,"date":"2026-03-19T10:16:36","date_gmt":"2026-03-19T13:16:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/projects.upei.ca\/geolab\/?page_id=3009"},"modified":"2026-05-29T19:47:48","modified_gmt":"2026-05-29T22:47:48","slug":"acsc-2026-upei","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/projects.upei.ca\/geolab\/events\/acsc-2026-upei\/","title":{"rendered":"Atlantic Canada Studies 2026 UPEI"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The UPEI Faculty of Arts and Canada Research Chair in Geospatial Humanities are pleased to welcome the Atlantic Canada Studies 2026 Conference to Charlottetown, from 2-5 June, 2026. The conference overlaps with the Canadian Historical Association (CHA) and the Canadian Catholic History Association meetings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>See the bottom of this page to access the latest ACS program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Registration<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To find information on registration, accommodation, and travel please visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/cha-shc.ca\/about\/what-we-do\/annual-meeting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CHA Annual Meeting website<\/a>. Online registration ended on 20 May; limited registration options will be available on site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Check-in<\/strong>, the&nbsp;<strong>book fair<\/strong>, some of the&nbsp;<strong>classrooms&nbsp;<\/strong>will be in MacDougall Hall (MCDH &#8211; #12 on the campus map). MacDougall Hall will serve as our organizational hub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please come to MCDH to check in, pick up your conference badge, and receive your copy of the ACS printed conference program and other conference materials. This can be done at any point between 8:00-5:00, Monday-Wednesday; 10:00-2:45 Thursday; 8:00-12:00 Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Food options<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given the high number of registrations, UPEI required attendees to order and pay for on-campus lunches in advance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Cafeteria breakfasts will be available June 1 to 5,&nbsp;from 7:30-9:00, for attendees staying on or off campus. Breakfasts cost $10.45 plus tax, and can be paid for with credit or debit cards only.&nbsp;The cafeteria is in the Wanda Wyatt Dining Hall, WDH \u2013 #18 on the map.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For people who have pre-ordered lunches through UPEI\u2019s food services, lunch will be available in the cafeteria (WDH #18). Boxed lunch orders can also be picked up in the cafeteria. The cafeteria will have a list of everyone who has ordered a lunch &#8211; attendees can just show their name badge and have their name checked off the list.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is a small cafeteria in the Veterinary College for on-campus food purchases.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Off-campus food options include a food truck (the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/p\/Saucy-Bird-100091966857788\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Saucy Bird<\/a>) across the road (University Ave) from MCDH and KMB. Restaurants include Spicy Chef, Burger King, Thai Express, Mucho Burrito. These are all a short walk away, as is the Superstore (groceries). If you are staying in a UPEI residence, you will have a fridge in your room.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Keynote and Plenary Sessions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Canadian History &amp; Environment Summer School (CHESS) <em>climate history address<\/em>, by Dr. Dagomar Degroot. <strong>Sunday<\/strong> 31 May, 17:30. \u201cReflections on Resilience: 20,000 Years of Climate History.\u201d All are welcome. Sean Cadigan, Rusty Bittermann, Linda Kealey, Barb Neis (with Astrid Jarre, Grant Murray and Ian Perry), and Rob Greenwood will speak on &#8220;The Life, Work, and Legacy of Rosemary Ommer: Resources for Recharting.&#8221; All participants who registered for ACS are welcome.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>ACS Reception<\/em>, <strong>Thursday<\/strong>, 4 June, 16:00-17:00, MSC 110 (McMillan Hall). Dr. Marchildon will speak on &#8220;Crisis, Continuity, and Reform: Understanding Medicare\u2019s Past and Imagining its Future in Atlantic Canada.&#8221; Pre-ordered lunches were required.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Extracurricular Activities, Tours, Field Trips<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><em>Lobster Dinner<\/em>, <strong>Wednesday<\/strong> 3 June, 18:00, Lobster on the Wharf, 2 Prince Street, Charlottetown. Join your colleagues at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/lobsteronthewharf.com\/our-venue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lobster on the Wharf<\/a>&nbsp;(pay on your own). Registration required in advance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Guided Tour of Skmaqn\u2014Port-la-Joye\u2014Fort Amherst National Historic Site<\/em>, <strong>Thursday<\/strong>, 9:00-12:00. This guided tour, offered by L\u2019nuey and Parks Canada, departs by bus from UPEI (main entrance of PAC) at 9:00 and returns to campus at 12:00. This is a pre-registered event. Registrants will receive a separate email containing further event details.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Guided Tour at Beaconsfield Historic House<\/em>, <strong>Thursday<\/strong>, Start times: 9:00 &amp; 11:00. A guided tour of one of the most beautiful houses on PEI:&nbsp;Beaconsfield Historic House! Designed and built by W.C. Harris in 1877, Beaconsfield was one of Charlottetown\u2019s most elegant homes. No registration required, first come, first served.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>The Bog Tour<\/em>, <strong>Thursday<\/strong>, Start times: 10:00 &amp; 12:00. A guided walking tour that explores the history of a lost Charlottetown neighbourhood: The Bog. Tours begin at the doors of Beaconsfield. (This program is funded by the PEI Government Anti-Racism Grant in Partnership with the Black Cultural Society of PEI.) Seating is limited, registration required.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Walking Tour of Charlottetown<\/em>, with Dr. Ed MacDonald.&nbsp;<strong>Saturday<\/strong>, 6 June, 9:30-11:00. The built environment of today\u2019s Charlottetown encapsulates 250 years of Island history. Laid out according to the dictates of the Age of Reason and shaped over time by physical and economic forces, the city furnishes a fascinating cross-section of architectural styles and lives lived. Join us and experience some of that history in a guided walking tour across the historic downtown\u2019s original \u201cFive Hundred Lots.\u201d Starting point: Queen Square on the corner of Great George and Richmond Streets. Parking available locally on adjacent streets at no cost on Saturday, or people can park in the provincial government parking lot across from Beaconsfield Historic House, 2 Kent Street (the tour\u2019s end point), six blocks from the start point on Queen Square.
