This service includes washing, sorting, separating rot, as well as metal and foreign material removal. The service is provided so that farmers can achieve a higher grade when selling their product to Cavendish Farms.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Problem Statement<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">PEI Potato Solutions is unable to increase their potato washing capacity due to environmental, economic, and volumetric restrictions, which govern the fresh and recycled water appropriation within their closed system. <em>Preliminary focus was on<strong> reducing the fresh water consumption of the plant.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_145\" style=\"width: 377px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-145\" class=\"wp-image-145 \" src=\"http:\/\/projects.upei.ca\/ssdeprojectportfolios\/files\/2017\/06\/20170406_103022.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"367\" height=\"210\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-145\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Spuddy Waters team with Client during their presentation at the School of Sustainable Design Engineering<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Spuddy Waters project Team, Ryan Myette, Angela Court, Tristan Dawson, Peter Doiron, worked out the problem of PEI Potatio Solutions and created a system for maintaining and improving the clients potato washing procedure.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"text-align: left;\">Design Solution<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For the design solution, It was decided that cleaning the recycled water would benefit the client the most as it will not affect the washing facility and will lower the fresh water consumption.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The original idea<\/strong> was to stagger the heights of the barrels, where<br \/>\nthe water would be gravity fed through the system.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-624 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/projects.upei.ca\/ssdeprojectportfolios\/files\/2017\/06\/Screen-Shot-2017-08-07-at-9.42.16-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"221\" height=\"117\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Further investigation into the specs of the filter indicated that the filter has an optimal flow rate and pressure. Therefore, <strong>a utility pump had to be purchased in order for the filter to reach its full potential of sediment removal.<\/strong> The pump is placed in the first barrel and would increase the flowrate through the filter.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-625 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/projects.upei.ca\/ssdeprojectportfolios\/files\/2017\/06\/Screen-Shot-2017-08-07-at-9.44.00-AM-300x92.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"92\" srcset=\"https:\/\/projects.upei.ca\/ssdeprojectportfolios\/files\/2017\/06\/Screen-Shot-2017-08-07-at-9.44.00-AM-300x92.png 300w, https:\/\/projects.upei.ca\/ssdeprojectportfolios\/files\/2017\/06\/Screen-Shot-2017-08-07-at-9.44.00-AM.png 412w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After the configuration above was tested, it was noticed that the water exiting the filter was not creating a cyclone. A cyclone at the exit indicates a good velocity of the water in the filter, resulting in sediment separation. They used the Centrifugal filter as means to design their prototype.<\/p>\n<p>After the water has been processed through the Spuddy Waters prototype filter, the results are clear, this filtration system is well designed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Biological Filtration Method<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-230 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/projects.upei.ca\/ssdeprojectportfolios\/files\/2017\/06\/Screen-Shot-2017-07-25-at-11.25.19-PM-300x161.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"161\" srcset=\"https:\/\/projects.upei.ca\/ssdeprojectportfolios\/files\/2017\/06\/Screen-Shot-2017-07-25-at-11.25.19-PM-300x161.png 300w, https:\/\/projects.upei.ca\/ssdeprojectportfolios\/files\/2017\/06\/Screen-Shot-2017-07-25-at-11.25.19-PM.png 327w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Cattails<\/strong> are self-sustaining and self-propagating which means they would require little<br \/>\nwork on them, except by planting them.
