She is the Coordinator of the Master of Arts in Island Studies (MAIS) program at the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/upei.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">University of Prince Edward Island<\/a>&nbsp;and Chair of the Institute of Island Studies Executive Committee. Her research focuses on islandness and island identity, including&nbsp;the power of place and story<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A 2007 graduate of the MAIS program, she graduated with her PhD in Geography and Environmental Studies from University of Tasmania in 2015. A long-time \u201cislophile,\u201d Laurie was Publishing Coordinator with the Institute of Island Studies from 1990 to 2004 and helped coordinate the North Atlantic Islands Programme (1994-98), which led to the formation of the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/northatlanticforum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">North Atlantic Forum<\/a>. In 2015, she chaired the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/pei2015.crrf.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Building Community Resilience Conference<\/a>&nbsp;(the 10<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;North Atlantic Forum and 27<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;Canadian Rural Restructuring Foundation annual conference) held in Summerside, and served on the steering committee of the 2016 international symposium,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/projects.upei.ca\/unescochair\/climate-change-and-islands-symposium\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Building Small Island Resilience to Global Climate Change<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Brinklow is actively involved in \u2019<a href=\"http:\/\/islandstudies.com\/mais-program\/island-studies-global-classroom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Island Studies: A Global Classroom<\/a>\u2019, an initiative spearheaded by the MAIS program at UPEI. Through this initiative, the MAIS program has established linkages with other researchers and scholars from island universities throughout the world, encouraging and facilitating knowledge-sharing both in person and via video conference.&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/islandstudies.com\/mais-program\/island-studies-global-classroom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Learn more<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Brinklow is President of the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/isisa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">International Small Islands Studies Association (ISISA)<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;is an ex officio member of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/vinlandpei\/?fref=ts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vinland Society of Prince Edward Island<\/a>&nbsp;Executive Committee. She is also Iceland\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.government.is\/diplomatic-missions\/country\/?itemid=407da7dd-f204-11e7-9423-005056bc530c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Honorary Consul<\/a>&nbsp;to Prince Edward Island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2018, Laurie was awarded the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.upeifa.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/ALL-Hessian-Merit-Award-Recipients.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Hessian Merit Award for Excellence in Teaching by a Sessional Instructor<\/a>&nbsp;at the University of Prince Edward Island.
