UPEI and the Faroe Islands International Community Energy Challenge<\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n

This lecture featured a presentation by UPEI students and their professor about an experiential learning opportunity that took them to the Faroe Islands in May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Six students, along with Professor Anna Demeo from the Sustainable Design Engineering School, were part of a week-long immersion program called the International Community Energy Challenge that took place in the Faroe Islands May 13-22, 2019. Sponsored by the Hydrogen Learning Network, with funding from Nordic Atlantic Cooperation (NORA), the program included universities from five countries: Canada, Iceland, Norway, Scotland, and the Faroe Islands. The objective of the ICEC was to immerse students in both the culture and community of the Faroe Islands while they tackled a real and current energy project for a local business or organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Student teams, comprised of students from each university, researched, developed, and proposed solutions for community clients. The outcome was intended to both provide clients with a fresh perspective for their business or organization while offering students the opportunity to work across disciplines to conceptualize solutions and put classroom skills to use in a tangible way. The program brought together students from all over the world and from a plethora of disciplines including business, environmental studies, engineering, communications, education, and climate change. Throughout the program, students participated in local activities to gain a better understanding of the people and the culture of the Faroe Islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
