{"id":4632,"date":"2019-04-02T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-04-02T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/islandstudies.com\/?p=4632"},"modified":"2019-04-02T09:00:00","modified_gmt":"2019-04-02T12:00:00","slug":"upei-and-university-of-aruba-cohost-international-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/projects.upei.ca\/testforneal\/2019\/04\/02\/upei-and-university-of-aruba-cohost-international-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"NEWS: UPEI co-hosts international conference with the University of Aruba"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\">UPEI&#8217;s UNESCO Chair in Island Studies and Sustainability and the University of Aruba co-host the 1st International Island States\/Island Territories Conference:<br \/><em>Sharing Stories of Island Life, Governance and Global Engagement<\/em><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>April 2, 2019 \u2014<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 1st International Conference on Small Island States and Subnational Island Jurisdictions was hosted March 26-29, 2019 by the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ua.aw\/\" target=\"_blank\">University of Aruba<\/a>, in collaboration with the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sustainablesids.org\/about-us\" target=\"_blank\">Centre of Excellence for the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States (COE)<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/projects.upei.ca\/unescochair\">UNESCO Chair in Island Studies and Sustainability<\/a>, which is shared between the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) in Canada and the University of Malta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"http:\/\/projects.upei.ca\/testforneal\/files\/2021\/04\/International-Academic-Island-StatesIsland-Territories-Conference-22.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4634\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The theme of the conference was <em>\u201cIsland States\/Island Territories: Sharing Stories of Island Life, Governance and Global Engagement<\/em>.\u201d The conference appealed to scholars, policy-makers, NGO representatives, students and members of the general public who networked and shared knowledge on Sustainable Development on islands. In total, the conference had approximately 100 participants. Several geographic regions were represented, including the Caribbean, Pacific and Africa, Indian Ocean, Mediterranean and South China Sea (AIMS), Australasia, and the North Atlantic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There were 18 local conference\u00a0presenters,\u00a0with a multi-disciplinary participation, which included local lecturers from three University of Aruba faculties: the Faculty for Accounting, Finance and Marketing of the University of Aruba (FEF), the Faculty of Arts and Science (FAS), and the Faculty of Hospitality &amp; Tourism Management Studies (FHTMS). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-layout-1 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The conference also awarded 6 international Student Travel Scholarships and 20 local University of Aruba students joined the sessions as part of their curriculum. Scholarship winners included Owen Jennings, a graduate of the UPEI MAIS program and now a PhD student at the University of Hawai\u2019i; and Patrick L\u00e9v\u00eaque, a current student in the UPEI MAIS program. <br \/><br \/>The international participants enjoyed an &#8220;Aruban Welcome&#8221; with a conference dinner at the Old Cunucu House and a field trip to Aruba\u2019s San Nicolas district, where they also visited the Industrial Museum to get to know about Aruba\u2019s island history.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/islandstudies.com\/files\/2019\/04\/scholarship-winners-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2558\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><em>Scholarship award-winners with Conference chair Jim Randall:\u00a0(l-r) Joris Sylvie, Universit\u00e9 des Antilles; Zhannah Voukitchevitch, University of Ottawa; Kristin De Kroon, University of Waterloo; Azell Francis, Georgia Institute of Technology;\u00a0Owen Jennings, University of Hawai&#8217;i; and Patrick\u00a0L\u00e9v\u00eaque, University of Prince Edward Island.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, the hosts were very proud to have had two female Heads of Government as keynote speakers addressing integrity in governance and the resilience of islands; both the Honourable Evelyna C. Wever-Croes, Prime Minister of Aruba &amp; Minister of General Affairs, Integrity, Energy, Innovation, &amp; Government Organization, as well as the Honourable Leona Romeo-Marlin, Prime Minister of Sint Maarten &amp; Minister of General Affairs, graced us with their insights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"249\" src=\"http:\/\/islandstudies.com\/files\/2019\/03\/Aruba-News-300x249.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2549\" srcset=\"https:\/\/projects.upei.ca\/testforneal\/files\/2019\/03\/Aruba-News-300x249.png 300w, https:\/\/projects.upei.ca\/testforneal\/files\/2019\/03\/Aruba-News-768x636.png 768w, https:\/\/projects.upei.ca\/testforneal\/files\/2019\/03\/Aruba-News-362x300.png 362w, https:\/\/projects.upei.ca\/testforneal\/files\/2019\/03\/Aruba-News.png 787w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption><em>Screen capture from <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.arubatoday.com\/university-of-aruba-and-the-coe-to-host-2019-international-island-conference\/\"><em>Aruba Today<\/em><\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The community enjoyed a free public lecture by Dr. Godfrey Baldacchino organized alongside the conference on the evening of March 28, whereby the University was honoured to receive the attendance of the Governor of Aruba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The conference\u2019s international planning committee is chaired by UNESCO co-chair, Dr. Jim Randall of the University of Prince Edward Island. Local co-hosts included Deborah Alexander from the Centre for Lifelong Learning at University of Aruba, Glenn Thod\u00e9, Rector of the University of Aruba, Patrick Arens, Business Director of the University of Aruba, and Arno Boersma and Francielle Lacl\u00e9 from the COE. The planning committee comprises scholars from several academic institutions including the University of the West Indies, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, University of Malta, Leiden University, and the University of the West of England.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"http:\/\/projects.upei.ca\/testforneal\/files\/2021\/04\/International-Academic-Island-StatesIsland-Territories-Conference-12.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4633\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Jim Randall noted that this was a wonderful opportunity to showcase the intellectual capacity and hospitality of the University of Aruba and the island in general. \u201cSeveral first-time international delegates said to me that this will not be the last time they plan on visiting Aruba,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Planning Committee is grateful for the contributions made by the sponsors to this event.
