Courses

Engineering Applications of Biological Materials; ENGN 3570

Course Description:This course will focus on the understanding of the basic molecular structures of biological materials, such as wood, bioplastics, biocomposites and biofuels, and their engineering applications. It will develop the fundamental understanding of relationships between composition, structure and properties of various materials of biological origin. It will also address molecular design of new biological materials applying the molecular structural principles. The long-term goal of this course is to teach molecular design of new biological materials for a broad range of applications. A brief history of biological materials and its future perspective as well as its impact to the society will also be discussed.

Chemical and Biological Process Engineering, ENGN 4550

Course Description: Processes used in the chemical and biological industries, which emphasize underlying physical, chemical, and biological principles, will be introduced. By carrying out the mass and energy balances, student will conduct design and economic assessment of major chemical and biological engineering processes. Introduction to modelling of chemical processes will be covered in this course.

Polymer Chemistry; CHEM 4640

Course Description: This course examines the synthesis, properties, and applications of organic polymers. Topics including condensation polymerization, ionic, free radical and controlled radical polymerizations will be covered. The applications of polymers prepared by controlled radical polymerization will be discussed in detail.

Biomaterials; CHEM 4090

Course Description: This course provides a comprehensive overview of biomaterials and their applications in medicines.  Physical and chemical properties of materials, their compatibility with biological fluids and their biodegradability will be studied.  A range of materials including natural and synthetic polymers, nanoparticles, peptides, hydrogels, metals, ceramics and their alloys will be explored for their biocompatibility and for clinical applications, such as drug delivery, tissue engineering, biotextiles, implants, stents, and grafts.  Topics including the body response to biomaterials, biomaterials rejection by the host body, and ethical issues associated with biomaterials will be discussed.

Organic Chemistry for Life Sciences, CHEM 2430

Course Description: This course is an introduction to organic chemistry for students in the life sciences (and others who do not intend to pursue a major in chemistry). Topics covered include the structure and reactivity of hydrocarbons and functional groups, stereochemistry, aromaticity, nucleophilicity and electrophilicity. Basic types of reactions discussed include nucleophilic substitution, elimination, addition, oxidation/reduction and reactions of carbonyl compounds.

General Chemistry, CHEM-1110

Course Description: Chemistry 1110 is the introductory chemistry courses required for students proceeding to degrees in Chemistry, Biology, Family & Nutritional Science, Engineering, and Physics. Chemistry 1110 provides practical knowledge and skills to understand the nature of the world around you.
