ACLC Weekly Roundup (March 25-29)

1) ACLC will be hosting a last day of class lunch on Wednesday, April 3rd, 12:00-1:30 in the Faculty Lounge (off the main lobby in SDU Main). Drop by for some free food!

2) #RisingYouth Community Service Grants. Do you have a great idea but need a little money to make it happen? #RisingYouth Community Service Grants (https://risingyouth.ca/) might be the way to make it happen! Sarah Gallant, the PEI contact for these grants, has offered to do an application workshop in which she would help you fill out an application. If you’re interested in attending a workshop, email me (kscarth@upei.ca) by the end of this week (March 22nd).

3) Summer course opportunity: Arts 1050-1  Policy Hack Internship: Design. Build. Change. (more information attached). Deadline: March 31, 2019

This unique experiential learning opportunity will allow students to contribute to writing a cabinet submission (Executive Council Memo) in relation to an authentic policy issue facing PEI. Registered students will be placed on a multi-disciplinary team of professionals, largely public servants, working in various sectors on PEI. A 3-hour in-class session will be conducted at the beginning, middle, and end of the internship to facilitate student readiness for the internship and a reflective learning cycle. Course readings and assignments will scaffold student participation in the internship as a contributing member on a team of professionals and will provide opportunities for meaningful reflection.  The internship itself will run for 6 Fridays, including: 8-hour launch and training day, regular team meetings (scheduling at the discretion of each team), 3-5 hours of independent work each week, and a final case competition day. Students will be expected to participate in the full program of events associated with the Provincial Policy Hack; any scheduling conflicts with be considered on a case by case basis.

Maximum student enrolment = 10

Students are eligible for a $200 scholarship upon successful completion of the internship

Number of internship hours (includes independent work) = 34 to 40 hours tentatively scheduled on 6 Fridays between May 3-June 7, 2019

Number of in-class hours = 9 hours on Tuesdays 6-9 (May 7, 21 and June 11)

Application: Because this is a unique opportunity for only 10 students, we are asking applicants to write a brief statement about why you wish to participate and a confirmation that you will be able to fulfil the commitment to the whole process. Your statement should be no more than 500 words. Please include one academic reference.

Deadline: E-mail your statement to policyhack@upei.ca by March 31, 2019
