With generous contributions from donors such as Dr. Martha Sweeting, Dr. Rosemary Henderson and the Rathlyn Foundation, Phase 1 was successfully completed in 2023, paving the way for Phase 2 to begin.

Phase 1 has resulted in the AVC being the only veterinary institution offering a full complement of in-house advanced imaging modalities in Atlantic Canada and is the gold standard in care for specialty services.

Phase 1 included:

  • a new magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) 1.5 Tesla scanner;
  • a refurbished computed tomography (CT) scanner;
  • a variety of ultrasound machines; and
  • fluoroscopy and endoscopy equipment for minimally invasive surgeries.

The new MRI scanner already enhances research, training, and learning opportunities not only for our veterinary students, but also for medical students in the new UPEI Faculty of Medicine.

The Centre will lead to opportunities for use of the MRI outside of the needs of UPEI. This will generate additional revenue and help to meet the MRI operating and maintenance costs, while reducing wait times for MRIs and improving healthcare services for Islanders needing diagnostic imaging services.
