Islands and Just Transitions

Maine

On Maine’s islands, it is estimated that residents pay more than $1 USD per gallon more for fuel to heat their homes. This is due to the additional costs to transport fuel. As such, Maine has created initiatives to help alleviate the costs for island residents to pay for installation and certification to adopt sustainable energy sources.

Denmark

Two islands in Denmark, Bornholm and Samsø, are prime examples of having 100% renewable energy sources. After facing economic crisis’ from fishing populations declining, they looked to sustainable energy. In Bornholm, jobs were created by investing in renewable energy systems, whereas in Samsø, locals were able to buy shares in wind turbine companies to help fund the transition, contributing to the local economy.
