Canadian Policies

In Canada, there is mandated carbon pricing and an agreement to phase out coal-powered electricity by 2030. As a result of these policies, many coal-fired power pants will start to close. The province of Ontario phased out all coal-fired power plants in 2014 due to public health, climate change and the environment.

Vancouver Declaration on Clean Growth and Climate Change

On March 3, 2016, the First Ministers of Canada issued the Vancouver Declaration on Clean Growth and Climate Change as a result of the Paris Agreement. The declaration recognized the need to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions while promoting clean economic growth and job creation across the country. Shortly after, on April 22, 2016, the government launched the “Let’s Talk Climate Action” website, where Canadians could post comments and ideas about how the country should address climate change. The website launch was combined with clean growth and climate change consultations by governments and working groups to be held across Canada.

Pan-Canadian Clean Growth and Climate Change Framework

This framework was also released in 2016, which outlines a plan for economic development while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This included support for research, export of clean energy technologies and hundreds of millions of dollars pledged for the development and deployment of clean technology.
