Following successful completion of the combined MVSc/Residency program in Anatomic Pathology at the AVC, I am now furthering my post-graduate training in Fish and Shellfish Pathology under the direct supervision of Drs. David Groman and Paul Hanna in the Aquatic Diagnostic Services Unit at the AVC. Modern aquaculture producers commonly require expert advice from well-trained morphologic pathologist, due to both regular health surveillance, routine diagnostic needs, export requirements, and disease control. My goal is to gain comprehensive histopathology knowledge of the fin-fish and shellfish diseases of concern to the Canadian aquaculture industry.
Thanks to the 2015 CERC Early Career Development support, I was able to visit the Abbotsford Animal Health Laboratory in British Columbia for four weeks in October 2015. This Animal Health Center is the provincial diagnostic laboratory for fin-fish pathology in British Columbia. During this time I trained along Drs Gary D. Marty, and Hein Snyman, two dedicated full-time fish pathologists. I had the opportunity to review the large histopathology collection of diagnostic cases which had been collected over the last 10 years. In addition, I reviewed recent cases, and completed a thorough review of the normal fin-fish histology. This experience has been fantastic and aided me to gain sound knowledge in fish pathologist. I am very grateful to CERC Early Career Development programme for supporting my externship.
