Dr. Greg Naterer is a Professor in the Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering and former Vice-President, Academic and Research, at the University of Prince Edward Island. In this role, he oversaw ten faculties and the Robertson Library, along with the University’s broader research and student services portfolios. His collaborative leadership contributed to UPEI achieving its highest first-year student retention rates in 25 years, increasing federal tri-agency research funding by approximately 80%, and advancing key strategic priorities, including the successful launch of new medical and Indigenous faculties.
Previously as Dean of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University, Dr. Naterer led a strategic expansion that significantly increased undergraduate and graduate enrolments. Under his leadership, the faculty’s international profile rose substantially, including ranking first in industry partnerships among Canadian comprehensive universities in the 2021 Times Higher Education World University Rankings. He co-led the creation of the Memorial Centre for Entrepreneurship in 2015, which was recognized among the world’s top five emerging entrepreneurship centres for two consecutive years by the Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers.
Dr. Naterer has made significant research contributions in energy systems and heat transfer, including three books, six patents, and more than 300 journal publications. As a former Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Advanced Energy Systems, he led an international team spanning four countries and five industrial partners to advance hydrogen energy technologies. This work included development of the world’s first large-scale copper–chlorine thermochemical water-splitting cycle for hydrogen production using nuclear, solar, or industrial waste heat. Since 2020, he has been named among the top 2% of scientists worldwide in the Stanford University / Elsevier rankings.
He has held national and international leadership roles in research and higher education, including as Chair of Engineering Deans Canada (formerly National Council of Deans of Engineering and Applied Science), Chair of the Thermophysics Technical Committee of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), Chair of the NSERC Discovery Grant Committee for Mechanical Engineering, and leadership within the International Association for Hydrogen Energy. Since 2014, he has served as Editor-in-Chief of the AIAA Journal of Thermophysics and Heat Transfer.
Dr. Naterer has received numerous awards and honours, including the Julian C. Smith Medal (Engineering Institute of Canada, EIC), the Jules Stachiewicz Medal (Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering, CSME), and the AIAA Thermophysics Award. He is an elected Fellow of CSME, AIAA, EIC, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE). He received his BMath (Applied Mathematics), MASc, and PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Waterloo.
