CLIVE

CLIVE (CoastaL Impacts Visualization Environment) is a leading-edge climate change impacts visualization tool.  It combines historical erosion data, IPCC model projections of future sea-level rise, aerial imagery, and high-resolution digital elevation data to develop analytical visualizations of coastal erosion and future sea-level-rise scenarios.  By utilizing 3D game engine technology, CLIVE is able to communicate serious scientific information in a manner that is intuitive and immersive.  Users can fly around the 3D environment using a videogame controller; select different erosion and sea-level rise scenarios; and navigate from any perspective, at any scale, to observe the changes to the environment over time.  CLIVE’s ability to allow citizens to view scientific data and explore climate change projects within their communities helps them understand the real impacts of these often abstract phenomena.

The effectiveness of CLIVE in educating citizens and raising awareness has helped it garner national and international attention including national text journalism (e.g., Globe and Mail); national Canadian broadcast coverage from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (e.g., World Report radio, The National with Peter Mansbridge), international journal coverage (e.g., National Geographic), and international television coverage (e.g., Al Jazeera media).  CLIVE has also earned awards in PEI and abroad.  The team that created CLIVE won an international award in 2014 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for Communicating Coastal Risk and Resilience. As a result of the CLIVE Roadshow to eight PEI communities, the PEI Association of Planners named Dr. Fenech the winner of the 2014 Murray Pinchuk Community Builder Award recognizing the highest standard of community building in the public and private realms, and efforts to develop a coastal erosion visualization tool and work to share ideas on how best to adapt to coastal erosion and sea level rise.
