Faith in Action

The Institute is committed to community outreach under the category of Faith in Action. It has, or is currently, sponsoring the following programs or events:

Financial support was given for a public panel discussion on the current state of food insecurity on PEI. The panel, “A Healthy Food Island for All? Food Insecurity and Public Health Policy: A Call to Action,” was organized by Dr. Jennifer Taylor, UPEI Department of Applied Human Sciences. Held on March 13th, 2017, the panel brought together brought together national and local scholars, public health and government officials and, members of the community to address this growing problem.

The Institute has a funding agreement to provide $7,500 per year for up to three years to support the Elder in Residence position at the Mawi’omi Aboriginal Student Centre at UPEI. The SDU Institute acknowledges the findings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and is pleased to advance its recommendations with financial support for this position.

In partnership with the World Youth Alliance (a global organization that works with the United Nations on questions pertaining to human dignity) the SDU Institute sponsored an Emerging Leaders Conference, held at UPEI, on November 17th-18th, 2017. The objective of the conference was teaching young adults about the dignity of the human person and empowering them to put their faith into action. As a result of this conference UPEI students have founded a provincial chapter of this international organization.

The Institute has provided financial support for a group of UPEI students who going on a Service Learning Trip to Honduras working with the Sisters of the Congregation of Notre Dame in the region. In February 2018, students will assist the local Sisters in construction projects while learning about the culture, living conditions and faith experiences of people in Central America.
